WASHINGTON, DC — U.S. Representative Hillary Scholten (D-MI-03) announced the City of Grand Rapids will receive $1,092,000 in federal support through the Community Project Funding (CPF) process. The funding will be used to upgrade the ultraviolet (UV) disinfection system at the city’s water resource recovery facility.

This bipartisan legislation would reauthorize an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) grant program that provides funds for states to develop and implement programs that manage nonpoint source water pollution, or pollution from diffuse sources including runoff from farms, managed forests and urban areas.

After months of delays and relentless advocacy from Rep. Scholten, the dredging is now set to begin imminently, avoiding lengthy delays that could have held up supply chains, increased costs for consumers, and been catastrophic for Michigan’s economy.

As of August 22, 2025, a U.S. Army Corps contract has been awarded, and dredging is set to begin this fall. For months, the project’s future was uncertain due to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) new testing requirements necessary to issue dredging permits.
