Congressional Youth Advisory Council (CYAC)

Hillary Scholten is pleased to announce the inaugural Congressional Youth Advisory Council (CYAC) for the 2026–2027 school year.
The CYAC is designed to elevate student voices across Michigan’s 3rd District. Council members will meet with Rep. Scholten’s office to discuss issues important to young people, recommend legislation for the Congresswoman to cosponsor or introduce, and collaborate directly with the office on key policy priorities impacting youth in the district.
Eligibility
Students are eligible to apply if they:
- Will be entering their junior or senior year during the 2026–2027 academic year, and
- Live in or attend school in Michigan’s 3rd Congressional District

Application Timeline
- Applications Open: April 1, 2026
- Applications Close: June 30, 2026 at 5:00 PM EST
Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.
Application Materials
Applicants must submit:
- Completed Application Form
- The online form includes several short-answer and essay questions.
- One Letter of Recommendation
- The letter should be written by an individual who can speak to the applicant’s character and qualifications.
- Recommenders should send the letter directly to the applicant, who will upload it as part of the application.
- Signed Consent Form

Is this a student-led council?
Yes. The CYAC is designed to be student-driven, with members playing an active role in shaping discussions and recommendations.
Will there be interviews?
All applicants who submit a complete application will participate in a brief interview with Rep. Scholten’s staff. Students will be asked a few questions and will also have the opportunity to ask their own.
How often will the council meet?
There will be five scheduled meetings per academic year, held from 4:30 PM – 6:00 PM EST on Wednesday. Students are expected to attend all meetings.
How long is the term?
Students will serve a one-year term for the 2026–2027 academic year.
Will the meetings be in-person?
Meetings will be a mix of in-person and virtual sessions.
