Scholten Votes to Fund the Government and Avoid Shutdown

November 14, 2023

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Hillary Scholten (MI-03) issued the below statement after voting for a two-step continuing resolution to fund the government at Fiscal Year 2023 levels and avoid a shutdown:

“I’m glad Speaker Johnson finally dropped the politics and met Democrats at the table to avoid a disastrous government shutdown. The resolution honors the spending agreement we made back in May when we raised the debt ceiling and leaves out extreme Republican wish list items that never would have become law.

My West Michigan neighbors can breathe a sigh of relief ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday, but the culture of deep division and chaos in this Congress is forcing us to legislate under the tyranny of the urgent preventing us from working toward the pragmatic approach to legislating that this country deserves.

Speaker Johnson was reminded once again today that when you work in a bipartisan way instead of bowing to extremists, you get things done.”
