Scholten Celebrates Unanimous Senate Passage of Bipartisan Legislation Recognizing the 50th Anniversary of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act

December 8, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Representative Hillary Scholten (D-Mich) announced that her legislation recognizing the 50th anniversary of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act has passed the Senate unanimously.

The bipartisan resolution recognized the historic step that West Michigan’s own President Gerald Ford took 50 years ago by signing the law, which mandates that every child in America, including those with disabilities, be given equal access to a free, appropriate public education.

“As President Ford’s present-day successor in Congress, I’m honored to carry on West Michigan’s legacy of achieving results for special education students,” said Rep. Scholten. “As the proud daughter of a special education teacher, it is especially meaningful to see my legislation pass the Senate unanimously. IDEA has transformed our classrooms and helped provide every child, regardless of background or disability, the resources they need to succeed. In the same spirit of bipartisanship that led to my legislation’s passage, let’s unite to fully fund President Ford’s landmark law and secure its promise for generations to come.”
