Rep. Scholten Votes Against Republicans’ Reckless Spending Bill That Threatens Veterans, Families and Gives a Blank Check to Trump and Musk

March 11, 2025

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Congresswoman Hillary Scholten (MI-03) voted against Republicans’ temporary spending bill that would hurt American families, seniors, and veterans. The bill passed. She emphasized that the Republican-controlled House continues to lurch from crisis to crisis, playing politics with people’s lives instead of working toward real solutions.

“The American people deserve a responsible, forward-thinking budget—not a reckless, last-minute band-aid that undercuts our most vulnerable communities,” said Rep. Scholten. “ I fully support responsible government reform and cutting waste, and the American people deserve a say in how that is done. They do that through their elected representatives in Congress. I am ready and willing to have a bipartisan conversation about a responsible budget that prioritizes efficiency and protects critical services.”

Scholten warned that this bill would enable Trump and Musk’s slash-and-burn approach to governing. By ramming through a temporary spending measure, House Republicans are giving free rein to those who have repeatedly shown they will put their own interests ahead of the American people. Rather than making thoughtful, strategic decisions about government spending through the official budget process, this bill allows unelected billionaires to dictate policy without input from the working families who will bear the brunt of these cuts.

Scholten also highlighted the damaging effects of the bill’s provisions, rejecting Republican claims that this is a “clean” spending bill. The bill slashes $860 million dollars in cancer and other medical research funding for service members, veterans, and military families. It also strips $22.8 billion dollars in funding for veterans exposed to toxic burn pits and $1.4 billion from the Army Corps of Engineers’ construction funding. Additionally, it eliminates rent subsidies for 32,000 low-income households, including families of veterans and survivors of domestic violence, jeopardizing their access to affordable housing.

ICYMI: Rep. Scholten discussed her opposition to the spending bill this week on CNN This Morning with Audie Cornish and MSNBC’s Morning Joe, where she laid out the consequences of the Republican-led bill and reaffirmed her commitment to standing up for American families, seniors, and veterans.
