Rep. Scholten Statement on House Republican Dysfunction
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Hillary Scholten (MI-03) issued the below statement on House Republicans’ dysfunction, which has caused the House of Representatives to go without a Speaker for 10 days and paused legislative action:
“I’m from the heart of conservative West Michigan. The Republican Party I came to know growing up was about fiscal and personal responsibility – without drama and against wasteful spending. Nothing could be further from the truth of today’s Republican Party, especially in the House of Representatives.
While they wage a civil war against one another, they are creating so much waste – wasting time, wasting resources, wasting money, and wasting opportunities. And for what? Petty grievances and emotional temper tantrums to further their own selfish agendas. Taxpayers, who sent us to Washington to get things done, deserve so much better than this.
I’ve said this repeatedly and it still holds true: I’m willing to work with my colleagues across the aisle to elect a Speaker and get this place moving again. I’m still waiting for them to take me up on that offer. The clock is ticking. The longer they wait, the more that communities in my district and across the country will suffer."
