Rep. Scholten Secures Crucial Investments for West Michigan’s Harbors in House Water Resources Development Legislation

June 26, 2024

The Army Corps will emphasize work in small harbors–such as those in Muskegon and Grand Haven–and draft annual reports outlining these harbors’ needs and expenditures.

WASHINGTON – Representative Hillary Scholten (MI-03) displayed her dedication to protecting West Michiganders’ interests once again through wins she secured in the 2024 Water Resources Development Act (WRDA24). The legislation will now head to the House floor for full consideration.

“This Water Resources Development Act marks the sixth consecutive year lawmakers have worked across the aisle and put our nation’s water resource needs first,” said Scholten.“The language we’ve worked to include in the bill will ensure 13 percent of Harbor Maintenance Trust Fund allocations are directed to the Great Lakes Harbors. Our Great Lakes are one of our nation’s greatest treasures, and these investments will ensure they are preserved for recreation, commerce, and as a sustainable water supply for generations to come.”

WRDA24 will authorize 124 new studies and 12 construction projects to both assess and bolster the integrity of our nation’s water resources and includes $50 million for community projects that will uplift West Michigan communities.
