Rep. Scholten Named One of the Most Bipartisan Members of Congress
Scholten among top 25 most bipartisan House Democrats
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Hillary Scholten (MI-03) was named one of the most bipartisan Members of Congress by the 2023 Congressional Bipartisan Index. Of the 435 Members of the House of Representatives, Scholten ranked 51st overall and among the top 25 most bipartisan House Democrats. She’s the second most bipartisan member of the Michigan delegation and the most bipartisan among members from West Michigan.
The Index is developed annually by Georgetown University’s McCourt School of Public Policy and the Lugar Center. The Index measures how often a Member of Congress introduces bills that obtain co-sponsors from the opposite party and how often they co-sponsor legislation introduced by the opposite party.
“Bipartisanship is always where I start. This Congress–with an agenda of chaos– has made it more challenging to cross party lines, but I’m finding opportunities to do just that. Knowing when to give in, and when to stand up and hold the line is the hard, value-driven work West Michigan sent me here to do. At the end of the day—I serve my district, and I’m committed to finding common ground to move our communities and our country forward. I’ll continue working tirelessly and in a bipartisan way to address the issues facing West Michiganders,” said Rep. Scholten.
Last year, Rep. Scholten introduced 8 bipartisan bills – including legislation to support small businesses, increase penalties for employers who break child labor laws, and ensure members of the U.S. Coast Guard get paid in the event of a government shutdown.
Earlier this month, Rep. Scholten was one of just 10 House Democrats to receive the Fiscal Hero award by Fix the Debt, a project of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, for her bipartisan work to rein in the national debt and be a responsible steward of taxpayer dollars.
