Rep. Scholten Cosponsors Bill to Defend Access to In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In the wake of the devastating Alabama Supreme Court decision that halted in-vitro fertilization treatments across the state, Rep. Scholten (MI-03) cosponsored the Access to Family Building Act to protect access to this critical reproductive treatment nationwide.
This week, Rep. Scholten joined her Democratic colleagues outside of the Capitol urging Congress to pass the bill immediately.
“IVF treatment has helped millions of women and families grow, and this horrific ruling is yet another attack by anti-choice extremists on access to our reproductive care,” said Rep. Scholten. “If Republicans have their way, what happened in Alabama won’t stay in Alabama, and they will continue their march toward a nationwide abortion ban and outlawing IVF for all. Over 125 Republicans have co-sponsored a bill that would mimic the Alabama ruling throughout the country. We don’t have to be hyperbolic–these are the facts. As the first woman and mother in history to represent West Michigan in Congress, I will continue to stand up against these attempts to control women’s bodies and support women and their family planning decisions. Congress must pass the Access to Family Building Act immediately.”
As the first woman and mother to represent West Michigan in Congress, Rep. Scholten is a champion for women’s rights issues in Congress. Last month, she hosted the Vice President in Grand Rapids for a roundtable discussion on protecting access to reproductive care.
She also held a reproductive health roundtable with healthcare leaders and advocates from across West Michigan in January.
