Rep. Scholten Champions Bill to Block Musk and His Loyalists from Accessing Americans’ Sensitive Data

February 7, 2025

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Congresswoman Hillary Scholten (MI03) announced she is championing the Taxpayer Data Protection Act alongside over 141 House Democrats. The bill would protect Americans’ sensitive personal information, such as Social Security numbers, from unelected and unaccountable Elon Musk and his co-conspirators.

“Elon Musk and the Administration’s actions are a direct threat to the privacy and security of Americans’ most sensitive personal information,” said Rep. Scholten. “Their efforts to take control of critical systems like Social Security and Medicare, without regard for security or accountability, are deeply troubling. The Taxpayer Data Protection Act is a vital step in protecting Americans’ personal data from unelected billionaires who have no business accessing it. This bill will ensure that Michiganders’ data remains secure.”

The Taxpayer Data Protection Act is a direct response to Elon Musk’s invasion of Americans’ privacy. The bill would curb corruption and stop people with conflicts of interest or without a security clearance from accessing the highly sensitive Treasury Department payment system, which is responsible for Social Security and Medicare benefits.

Earlier this week, Scholten introduced the CLEAR Act to hold Musk and DOGE accountable. The bill would implement stricter oversight and transparency measures for organizations like DOGE, ensuring they are subject to the same level of scrutiny as other government entities, particularly concerning their use of taxpayer dollars and access to sensitive information.
