Rep. Scholten Announces Two Grants Totaling Over $20.1 Million for Muskegon County Airport
WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Representative Hillary Scholten (MI-03) announced over $20.1 million in federal grant dollars for Muskegon County Airport (MKG). One grant totaling over $20M will fund upgrades to Taxiway A ensuring the airport conforms with current standards. Another $100K in grant dollars is specifically allocated to acquire and install zero emissions equipment – including vehicles and rechargers – to bolster the airport’s sustainability and energy efficiency.
“Muskegon County is home to West Michigan’s crown jewel – our lakeshore – and the community deserves an airport that not only meets their needs, but can serve as a gateway to lucrative tourism and business,” said Scholten. “Thousands flock to Muskegon annually to take advantage of the beautiful beaches, but this travel has been inhibited by the airport’s structure and current servicer. As a true port town – boasting one of the largest deep water ports on Lake Michigan – investing in MKG is a matter of upholding economic progress and national security. Now, the airport will see necessary structural improvements and be equipped with energy-efficient technology to cut costs and protect our community from the threat of carbon emissions for years to come. MKG is a crucial transportation hub not just for the region but for our nation, and that’s why I’ve fought so hard to bring these dollars home. ”
“This federal funding announcement represents another critical milestone in the revitalization of our airport as well as highlighting both the FAA’s and Muskegon County’s commitment to improving transportation access in West Michigan,” said Ken Efting, Muskegon County Airport’s Director. “This project will replace some of our oldest airfield surfaces from the 1960s, improve aviation safety at MKG, and set the stage for future growth to match development around the Muskegon Lakeshore.”
“This investment also underscores why it is so important for the FAA to quickly take action on my letter to allow MKG to move forward with their Essential Air Service Contract with Denver Air Connection,” continued Scholten. “Let’s get this contract confirmed so these upgrades are quickly put to good use.”
