RECAP: Rep. Scholten, ITI Institute, and Michigan Farm Bureau Tour Orchard Using Artificial Intelligence

The tour and the following roundtable focused on how artificial intelligence can address unique challenges facing farmers.
SPARTA, MI – Congresswoman Hillary Scholten (MI-03) was joined by local farmers, representatives of the ITI Institute, the Michigan Farm Bureau, and leaders in artificial intelligence for a tour of Schweitzer Orchards. The orchard utilizes artificial intelligence (AI) for apple sorting. Michigan is the nation’s third-largest producer of apples and AI helps farmers efficiently deal with the crop’s abundance.
“Artificial intelligence is the new frontier,” said Rep. Hillary Scholten. “Farming has benefited from all types of innovation over the years from automatic irrigation to specialized machinery. Now, it is fascinating to see how the adaptations continue to evolve to meet the needs of our fast-moving world. There’s so many more opportunities for growth within this realm, and I look forward to working with local farmers and national partners to equip more farms with this world-class technology.”
“AI is having a tangible and positive impact in West Michigan. Today we saw how local farmers are utilizing AI to evaluate apple quality and inventory, highlighting how this important tool is solving challenges for communities across the U.S,” said Ashley Berrang, Executive Director of the ITI Institute.
“Michigan has some of the most creative and innovative farmers in the country. Many of the technological gains and adaptations of AI discussed at today’s meeting highlight the need for further investment to help keep U.S. farmers competitive globally. Current farm bill proposals include significant investments in automation and mechanization which are crucial to keeping our farms profitable for the long-term. We need a new farm bill along with technological advancements to come quickly and be affordable and we applaud Congresswoman Scholten for her attention to this critical policy issue,” said John Kran, National Legislative Counsel with Michigan Farm Bureau.
