ICYMI: Rep. Scholten Calls for Increased Accountability and Transparency on MSNBC’s “Way Too Early”

February 28, 2025

WASHINGTON, DC – On Thursday, February 27, U.S. Congresswoman Hillary Scholten (MI03) joined MSNBC’s “Way Too Early” calling for increased transparency in Trump’s Administration and discussing the importance of listening to constituents, regardless of political party. Scholten also talked about her experience hosting a town hall in Cannon Township, a Republican stronghold in West Michigan. She pushed back on Republican leadership claiming that unhappy constituents in Republican districts were paid actors and that Republicans should stop hosting town halls.

“It is so critically important that we are showing up and listening to our constituents right now, and I can tell you, I’ve had the exact opposite experience,” said Rep. Scholten. “What we heard was story after story from people who were terrified about the rampant cuts, who were horrified that an unelected billionaire — Trump’s top campaign donor — has potentially access to their taxpayer data. When I told them about my bill, the CLEAR Act and the Taxpayer Data Protection Act, they stood up and cheered because they were so grateful to see someone pushing back against this agenda.”

Scholten’s CLEAR Act sets stricter oversight and transparency measures for organizations such as DOGE, so they are subject to the same level of scrutiny as other government agencies. While the Taxpayer Data Protection Act ensures that unelected and unaccountable people like Elon Musk and his co-conspirators cannot access Americans’ sensitive personal information, including Social Security numbers.
