Rep. Scholten Addresses Her Votes on H. J. Res. 24 and H. J. Res. 26

Today, I voted no for H. J. Res. 24 and H. J. Res. 26. Both of these bills override legislation passed by the duly elected government of Washington, DC. When the Republicans took the majority in the House, they promised to lower prices for everyday Americans. But instead–they’re using valuable taxpayer dollars and Representative’s time to try and meddle in local governments.
Folks, this is not your father’s Republican Party. The party that once advocated for small government and decisions to be made at the most local level possible is now advocating for the federal government to dictate to city governments which of their ordinances count and which do not.
When it comes to governing, I believe decisions should be made at the most local level possible, and the federal government should play a specific, relatively small, and very effective role. Elected local officials must have the freedom to legislate how they choose. I’m ready to get to work on common sense legislation for the people of MI-03.
