Congresswoman Scholten Announces $5.4 Million for Medical Research Projects at Van Andel Institute
WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Congresswoman Hillary Scholten (D-MI-03) announced Van Andel Institute in Grand Rapids will receive $5,409,432 in federal support through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The funding will support a variety of critical medical research projects.
“Van Andel Institute continues to make our state proud through cutting-edge clinical research and discoveries,” said Congresswoman Scholten. “These projects will advance our understanding of a variety of health concerns and how to treat them, including cancer, allergies, and complications with aging. Federal investments like these are exactly how the government should be showing up for our communities, and I will always be an advocate for the brilliant researchers and clinicians in West Michigan.”

- This funding will specifically support research into the switch between anabolic and catabolic metabolism.
- $796,798 – Cancer Biology Research
- This funding will specifically support research into how fatty acid saturation impacts cancer progression.

- This funding will specifically support research into the dietary regulation of anti-tumor immunity.
- $720,000 – Biomedical Research and Research Training
- This funding will specifically support research into the structural mechanism of DNA replication.
- $585,279 – Aging Research
- This funding will specifically support research into joint aging and osteoarthritis development.
- $496,922 – Cancer Treatment Research
- This funding will specifically support research into histotripsy.
- $475,000 – Biomedical Research and Research Training
- This funding will specifically support research into mitochondrial metabolism.
- $440,318 – Aging Research
- This funding will specifically support research into network and cellular vulnerability to pathological protein progression.
- $192,240 – Cancer Research
- This funding will specifically support research into acute leukemia.
- $49,114 – Biomedical Research and Training
- This funding will specifically support research into the regulation of mitochondrial bioenergetics.
This funding reflects Rep. Scholten’s ongoing work to bring federal investment back to Michigan’s Third Congressional District and strengthen the region’s health care infrastructure. Earlier this year, Rep. Scholten announced $555K for neurological research at Van Andel Institute.
